Mysterious Tome // Chilling Chronicle

Mysterious Tome // Chilling Chronicle is a double-faced card released in the 2022 Innistrad: Double Feature set, a curated collection that combined cards from the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Innistrad: Crimson Vow expansions. The set was designed with a distinct grayscale aesthetic, utilizing high-contrast silver screen foiling to evoke the atmosphere of classic black-and-white horror cinema. This specific card represents the theme of dark knowledge and cursed literature central to the Gothic horror setting of the Innistrad plane.

The card’s design features art by Matt Stewart, who captured the transformation from a dormant book into an active, spectral threat. Mechanically, the card allows players to pay mana to draw cards before flipping into a creature, reflecting the narrative arc of a character descending into madness through occult study. Upon its release, the Double Feature set was noted by collectors for its unique visual treatment, which sought to bridge the gap between traditional trading card art and the nostalgic style of mid-20th-century creature features.
