Where it came from
Mystic Gate was first introduced in the Shadowmoor set in 2008 as part of a cycle of filter lands designed to support the intense color requirements of hybrid mana cards. It was developed by the Wizards of the Coast design team to provide reliable mana fixing for Azorius-aligned decks, allowing players to filter colorless or specific-colored mana into white and blue mana sources.
