Where it came from
The Mythos of Snapdax was released in 2020 as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents the apex predator Snapdax, one of the primary monsters designed for the set's central theme of mutation and monstrous evolution. The card was crafted to showcase the visual identity of the Mardu color wedge, emphasizing aggressive, high-impact battlefield presence through its distinct ability to destroy multiple creatures.
The artwork for this card was commissioned from artist Jason Rainville, who was tasked with illustrating the visceral, terrifying scale of the apex beasts inhabiting the world of Ikoria. Rainville utilized a dramatic, low-angle perspective to convey the sheer mass and destructive capability of the creature. Upon release, the cycle of 'Mythos' cards was well-received by players for both their mechanical versatility and their success in building the imposing atmosphere of a world dominated by gargantuan monsters.
