Provenance

Where it came from

Nantuko Shrine was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Otaria, the expansion focused on a world recovering from a magical apocalypse, featuring themes of graveyard interaction and decay. The card itself represents the spiritual practices of the Nantuko, an insectoid race of monks who were central to the lore of the Odyssey block.

The artwork was illustrated by Franz Vohwinkel, a prolific artist for the game known for his painterly style and ability to convey fantasy environments. The design of the card mechanically ties into the graveyard-centric theme of the set, rewarding players for having multiple copies of the same creature type in their discard pile. Upon release, it was regarded as a niche utility card, primarily finding a home in casual tribal decks rather than the competitive tournament scene.
