Necrologia was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus set, the second expansion in the Magic: The Gathering Rath Cycle. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to introduce the 'dead draw' mechanic and explore the dark, mechanical themes of the Phyrexians, an antagonistic artificial race that seeks to conquer other planes. The card represents a departure from standard resource management, forcing a player to discard their hand and pay life in exchange for drawing cards, a high-risk mechanic reflective of the set's aggressive, 'all-in' design philosophy.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Heather Hudson, a longtime contributor to the game. Hudson utilized a surreal, muted aesthetic to capture the ominous nature of the necromancy described in the card's flavor text.
