Provenance

Where it came from

Necromancer's Covenant was released in 2009 as part of Alara Reborn, the final expansion set for the Alara block in Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique at the time because it consisted entirely of multi-colored cards, designed to represent the convergence of five distinct shards that had previously existed in isolation. The card was created to reflect the lore of Grixis, a plane defined by death, decay, and the hunger for life force, fitting the set's narrative of encroaching necrotic power.

The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, whose dark, visceral aesthetic was a staple of the Grixis aesthetic during this era. Kendall aimed to capture the essence of a pact made with the undead, portraying the covenant as a grim, magical tether between the living and the reanimated. Upon its release, it was recognized primarily as a high-cost enchantment for casual and Commander play, praised for its ability to generate a recurring army of zombie tokens while providing a consistent drain effect on opponents.
