Where it came from
Necromantic Selection was released in 2017 as part of the Commander 2017 expansion, specifically appearing in the Draconic Domination preconstructed deck. This set was notable for introducing tribal-themed decks that focused on dragons, cats, vampires, and wizards. The card functions as a board wipe with a reanimation upside, aligning with the powerful, high-impact spells traditionally favored in the Commander format.
The card’s illustration was provided by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often explores dark, gothic fantasy themes within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. His approach for this piece emphasizes the macabre nature of the spell, depicting a ritualistic return from the grave. The design has been well-regarded by players for its ability to shift the momentum of a game, serving as both a defensive stabilizer and an offensive catalyst.
