Where it came from
Necromaster Dragon was released as part of the Dragons of Tarkir set in 2015, specifically featured as a promotional card for the set's prerelease events. The card was designed to embody the themes of the Sultai Brood, a faction within the world of Tarkir known for their necromantic magic and obsession with undeath. Mechanically, the card was crafted to reward players for dealing combat damage by creating zombie tokens, reinforcing the flavor of a dragon that reanimates the fallen.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Svetlin Velinov, who utilized a dramatic, dark aesthetic to capture the dragon’s decaying, spectral presence. During the development of the Tarkir block, Wizards of the Coast focused on a 'khans versus dragons' narrative tension, and the promo version allowed players to preview the power of the elder dragons. The card was well-received by limited format enthusiasts for its ability to dominate board states, becoming a hallmark piece for collectors interested in the unique visual identity of the Dragons of Tarkir promotional series.
