Needle Spires was originally printed as a rare land in the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion in 2016, later appearing in the Zendikar Rising Commander set under collector number 137. It represents the magically altered, jagged landscapes of the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile mana and shifting geography. The card serves a strategic purpose in gameplay, functioning as both a source of red and white mana and a creature that can be animated during combat.

The art for this land was illustrated by Cliff Childs, who aimed to capture the alien, precarious aesthetic of Zendikar’s spire formations. The design emphasizes the thin, dangerous architecture of the terrain, reflecting the plane's history of corruption by the Eldrazi.
