Provenance

Where it came from

Nekrataal was originally released in the 1997 Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Mark Tedin. The card features a night-stalker creature that provides an immediate, powerful removal effect upon entering the battlefield. Tedin's artwork leaned into the set's themes of African-inspired folklore and dark fantasy, establishing the character as a distinct, spindly menace that quickly became a staple for black-aligned control decks.

The 1997 World Championship Decks version, identified by the collector number js66, is a commemorative reprint included in the preconstructed deck belonging to Jakob Söderberg, who won the 1997 World Championship. These decks were printed with gold-bordered cards to distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards and featured the player's signature printed on the face. This specific release served to document the meta-game history of the event and provide fans a chance to own cards that mirrors the exact configuration used by the world's top competitive players at the time.
