Provenance

Where it came from

Nest Invader was originally printed in the 2010 set Rise of the Eldrazi, designed to introduce the Eldrazi, ancient and incomprehensible beings that consume reality. As a common creature, it was engineered to provide early-game stability for green decks by creating an Eldrazi Spawn token upon entering the battlefield, a mechanic central to the set's theme of sacrifice and ramp. The card was later featured in the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a collection that revisited classic multiplayer formats and iconic cards from Magic: The Gathering's history.

The artwork was created by illustrator Trevor Claxton, who aimed to capture the unsettling, biomechanical aesthetic of the Eldrazi. Claxton's design emphasizes the creature's spindly, alien physiology, effectively communicating its role as a precursor or scout for the larger entities within the lore. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its versatility, finding a permanent home in various Pauper and Cube environments due to its efficient cost and utility as both a blocker and a resource for mana acceleration.
