Where it came from
The Netherese Puzzle-Ward was released as part of the Forgotten Realms Commander set in 2021, a crossover expansion integrating Dungeons & Dragons lore into the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Mechanically, the card reflects the high-magic, arcane atmosphere of the ancient Netherese Empire, specifically drawing inspiration from the complex magical traps and defenses iconic to Dungeons & Dragons adventuring modules.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a clean, ethereal style to evoke the feeling of activating a magical security device. Within the game's design, it functions as a flexible utility card, fitting into the 'Commander' format's emphasis on long-term strategy and resource management. It was well-received by players for its thematic flavor and ability to provide card advantage while punishing opponents for interacting with its trigger conditions.
