Nevinyrral, Urborg Tyrant

Nevinyrral, Urborg Tyrant was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Commander Legends, a set specifically designed to bridge the gap between traditional booster pack drafting and the popular Commander format. The card represents a legendary figure from Magic’s lore, Nevinyrral, who was previously only known by his famous artifact, Nevinyrral's Disk. His inclusion in this set was a long-awaited moment for fans of the game's deep history, providing a concrete identity for a character who had existed as a mythic footnote for decades.

The card was illustrated by the artist Fajareka Setiawan, who utilized a dark, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the essence of a tyrannical necromancer emerging from the swamps of Urborg. The design reflects the character's reputation as a master of destruction, featuring a triggered ability that echoes the board-wiping power of his namesake artifact. Upon release, the card was widely received as a flavorful and mechanically thematic interpretation of a classic piece of lore, finding a stable place in the Commander format as both a powerful engine and a tribute to the game's early storytelling.
