Provenance

Where it came from

Nezumi Cutthroat was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa set, the first installment in a block heavily inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore. The card represents the Nezumi, a race of humanoid rat-folk unique to the Kamigawa plane who were designed to emphasize the darker, scavenged aesthetic of the setting's underworld. As a creature with the 'fear' keyword and a shift between being a creature and a spell, it was intended to showcase the set's focus on fluid combat mechanics and creature-based interactions.

The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, whose contribution was meant to capture the rogue-like, treacherous nature of the Nezumi within the grime of their subterranean home. By utilizing a muted color palette and dynamic pose, Cavotta aimed to evoke a sense of lurking danger. Upon its debut, the card was received as a functional, flavorful inclusion for black-aligned aggro decks, noted specifically for its ability to bypass common defenders of the era.
