Provenance

Where it came from

Nezumi Bone-Reader was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavily from Japanese folklore and mythology, introducing the Nezumi, a race of humanoid rat-folk who dwell in the shadows of the Kamigawa plane. This card was designed to mechanicaly embody the themes of resource attrition and sacrifice common to the black mana color alignment within the game.

The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prominent illustrator in the early 2000s era of the game. Moeller employed his signature gritty, high-contrast aesthetic to depict the Bone-Reader hunched over ritual remains, emphasizing the dark, occult nature of the Nezumi culture. The piece was well-received for its atmospheric contribution to the set's immersive world-building, cementing the visual identity of the Kamigawan rat-folk for long-term players.
