Where it came from
Nightmare Moon // Princess Luna was released in 2019 as the inaugural card in the Ponies: The Galloping set, a special crossover collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and the My Little Pony franchise. Designed to commemorate the conclusion of the long-running Friendship is Magic television series, the card features a dual-faced mechanic that allows players to transform the villainous Nightmare Moon into the redeemed Princess Luna, mirroring her narrative arc within the show.
The card's art was created by fan-favorite illustrator Rebecca Dart, who captured the two distinct personas of the character in a style consistent with the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic while maintaining the iconic charm of the animated series. The release was met with significant interest from both the Magic community and the Brony fandom, as it marked an unprecedented bridge between a traditional trading card game and a modern pop-culture phenomenon.
