Nightscape Familiar

Nightscape Familiar was originally printed in the 2000 Invasion expansion, designed as part of a cycle of creatures that reduced the costs of spells based on color alignment. The card was created to provide tempo advantages for players running Grixis colors, specifically emphasizing the synergy between black mana and spell casting. Its return in the 2013 Commander set allowed the card to reach a wider audience of casual format players who valued its utility in reducing the cost of blue, black, and red spells.

The artwork for the card features a recurring illustration by artist Pete Venters, whose work defined much of the aesthetic for the Invasion block. Venters aimed to capture the unsettling, nocturnal nature of the creature, depicting it as a shadowy, winged companion fitting the dark thematic elements of the Phyrexian-aligned forces. Upon its release, the card was well-received for its mechanical efficiency, becoming a staple in various deck archetypes that rely on chaining spells together.
