Where it came from
Nikara, Lair Scavenger was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 set, which accompanied the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the 'Ruthless Regiment' and companion-themed mechanics introduced in this set, specifically focusing on the synergy between counters and creature behavior within the Abzan color identity.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive character designs. Her portrayal of Nikara emphasizes the scavengers' aesthetic of the Ikoria plane, aiming to balance a rugged, survivalist appearance with the fluid, tactical mechanics required for multiplayer Commander play. It remains a staple for players building decks centered around +1/+1 counter manipulation.
