Where it came from
Nine-Fingers Keene was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, which sought to bring the iconic characters and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into the Commander card game format. The card depicts a legendary rogue from the Forgotten Realms setting, reflecting the franchise's deep lore by incorporating mechanics that reward exploration and the acquisition of map-themed artifacts.
The character design was brought to life by illustrator Igor Kieryluk, who focused on capturing the agile and elusive nature of a master thief operating within the shadows of Baldur's Gate. The artistic direction emphasizes the character's signature maimed hand and the grim, urban environment of the city, aiming for a visual balance between fantasy adventure and the gritty underworld aesthetic typical of rogues in this gaming universe.
