Where it came from
Norin the Wary was released in 2006 as part of the Time Spiral expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed as a nostalgic tribute to the game's history, featuring mechanics and characters from the earliest years of the franchise. Norin is a direct callback to a flavor text reference found on the 1994 card Brass Man, where he was depicted as a perpetually cowardly character who flees from any sign of conflict.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who captured the character's signature nervous energy and eccentric appearance. Mechanically, the card was designed to embody its namesake's personality by blinking out of play whenever a spell is cast or combat begins, making it a notoriously difficult card to interact with. While initially viewed as a novelty or a fringe card for niche strategies, it eventually gained a dedicated following among players who appreciated its unique ability to trigger enters-the-battlefield effects repeatedly.
