Where it came from
Not of This World was introduced as part of the Commander Masters set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2023. This set was specifically designed to provide high-powered reprints and new cards tailored for the Commander format, which prioritizes social, multiplayer gameplay. As a colorless instant, the card serves as a protective utility tool intended to safeguard large creatures from targeted removal or negative effects, reflecting the 'Eldrazi' thematic influence prevalent in its set's design.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Jason A. Engle, who utilized a stark, ethereal aesthetic to capture the otherworldly and reality-warping nature of the Eldrazi entities. The design focuses on conveying a sense of cosmic menace and defensive disruption, aligning with the card's function of exiling a spell or ability that targets a permanent. It was received as a functional staple for decks centered on high-mana colorless creatures, valued for its efficient defensive capabilities within the Commander meta.
