Provenance

Where it came from

The Nucklavee was released in 2011 as part of the initial Commander set, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to support the popular fan-created Elder Dragon Highlander format. The card was included in the 'Mirror Mastery' preconstructed deck, intended to showcase the red and blue color identity through a creature that rewards players for recycling instants and sorceries from their graveyard.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Matt Cavotta, who utilized a vivid and somewhat grotesque style to represent the creature from Orcadian mythology. The design focuses on the Nucklavee’s chimeric nature, blending equine and human features to create a haunting visual. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility creature, praised by casual players for its ability to generate card advantage in longer, multiplayer Commander games.
