Where it came from
Oath of Liliana was released in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Eldritch Moon. The card depicts the necromancer Liliana Vess pledging her support to the Gatewatch, a group of planeswalkers formed to protect the multiverse. This card represents a pivotal narrative moment where Liliana, typically portrayed as self-serving, reluctantly joins the alliance during the battle against the cosmic horror Emrakul.
The artwork was illustrated by Wesley Burt, who aimed to capture Liliana's signature aesthetic of dark, gothic elegance contrasted against the grotesque, mutating influence of the Eldrazi. The design reflects the 'Oath' cycle's mechanical theme of rewarding players for controlling planeswalkers, and it was generally well-received by players for its flavor-driven utility in control-oriented deck archetypes of the era.
