Where it came from
Oboro, Palace in the Clouds was released in 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a legendary land card, it was crafted to reflect the thematic focus of the Kamigawa block, which drew heavily from Japanese folklore and mythology. The card was intended to provide strategic utility by allowing players to return it to their hand, a mechanic that mirrored the elusive and shifting nature of the legendary palace it depicts.
The artwork for Oboro was created by the artist T.D.C., who aimed to capture the ethereal and isolated beauty of a sanctuary floating above the mist. Upon its release, the card was received with measured interest by the competitive community, though it gradually gained recognition for its unique mana-fixing capabilities and its interaction with mechanics that reward landfall or hand-size triggers. It remains a hallmark of the set for its blend of atmospheric illustration and distinct mechanical versatility.
