Where it came from
Oboro, Palace in the Clouds was released in 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing inspiration from Japanese mythology and folklore, the Kamigawa block introduced a top-down design philosophy centered on spirit-themed mechanics and legendary permanents. As a legendary land, Oboro was engineered to serve as a recurring resource, allowing players to bounce the card back to their hand to mitigate mana flood or provide synergy with landfall and discarding mechanics that would become more prominent in later sets.
The card’s aesthetic was crafted by veteran artist Rob Alexander, whose extensive work on the game’s landscapes is highly regarded for its atmospheric clarity and sense of place. Alexander was tasked with depicting the ethereal, floating aesthetic of the Kamigawa setting, utilizing soft, vertical lines and muted blues and whites to evoke the feeling of a palace suspended in the heavens. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile utility land, eventually finding a permanent home in various competitive formats where its ability to manipulate land drops and act as a colorless mana source proved highly efficient.
