Provenance

Where it came from

The Ogre Gatecrasher was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension expansion, the third and final set in the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced players to the final three guilds of the plane, including the Gruul Clans, an anarchic group represented by the red and green color identity. Designed for the game's evolving limited play environments, the card reflects the aggressive and chaotic aesthetic of the Gruul faction, which sought to dismantle the civilization of Ravnica.

The artwork for Ogre Gatecrasher was illustrated by Anthony Francisco, a veteran artist whose work on the set captured the raw, destructive nature of the Gruul guild. The design focused on conveying a sense of brute force, fitting the card's role as a creature intended to overwhelm opponents early in a game. Upon its release, it was recognized as a functional, low-cost aggressive creature that typified the design philosophy of the period, which emphasized guild-specific mechanical identities and flavorful creature typings.
