Where it came from
The Old-Growth Troll, numbered 185p, was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering set Kaldheim in early 2021. Designed to showcase the set's focus on Norse-inspired mythology and the cycle of life and death, the card depicts a creature tethered to the forest floor, reflecting the set's mechanical emphasis on land-based synergy and recursion.
The illustration was rendered by artist Marta Nael, who utilized a vivid, painterly style to capture the imposing nature of the troll. Within the game's meta-game context, the card was well-received for its efficiency and unique ability to transform into an enchantment upon destruction, solidifying its place as a staple in green-based decks during its tenure in the Standard format.
