Where it came from
Oona's Blackguard first appeared in the 2008 Morningtide expansion and was later reprinted in the 2020 Jumpstart set, featuring the collector number 261. The card was designed to support the rogue creature type within the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor block, emphasizing the mechanics of discarding cards and the prowl keyword. As a creature that grants all other rogues an additional power boost and the ability to force opponents to discard cards, it was intended to serve as a cornerstone for aggressive, resource-denying tribal decks.
The artwork for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific illustrator whose work defines much of the dark, ethereal aesthetic associated with the Faerie race in Magic: The Gathering. Briclot's interpretation focuses on the menacing, shadowy nature of the Blackguard, aligning with the artistic direction of the Shadowmoor setting which explored a twisted, nocturnal version of the previously whimsical Lorwyn plane. The design is widely regarded by players for its efficient utility in rogue-themed decks and its evocative contribution to the game’s lore regarding the sinister agents of Queen Oona.
