Provenance

Where it came from

The Orc General card was released in 1994 as part of The Dark, the fifth expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was themed around a gloomy, gothic aesthetic and introduced a narrative centered on the conflict between the Order of the Ebon Hand and the Cult of Skjold. The expansion is historically significant for being one of the first sets to explore deep, unified world-building rather than just relying on generic fantasy tropes.

The artwork for the Orc General was created by illustrator Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists involved in the early years of the game. Maddocks utilized a gritty, textured style that defined the visual identity of many cards from the game's formative era. The design sought to emphasize the savage and military nature of the orc faction, fitting perfectly into the darker, more atmospheric tone that defined the mid-nineties expansion cycles of the game.
