Orcish Conscripts

Orcish Conscripts was first introduced in the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ice Age in 1995, before being reprinted with the same artwork in the Fifth Edition core set in 1997. It was designed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was aggressively expanding the game's mechanical depth, reflecting the early aesthetic of the game where artists were encouraged to lean into high-fantasy tropes of brutal, aggressive creature types.

The card features artwork by Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators for the game. Maddocks utilized a gritty, visceral style that defined many red-aligned cards in the 1990s, focusing on the raw and chaotic nature of the orcish military forces within the game's lore. While it was viewed as a modest common-rarity card in terms of competitive play, it remains a notable piece of the game's early visual identity, representing the transition from the limited scope of Alpha to the broader, more unified design language of the core sets.
