What it does
First strike; banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)
"As the cavalry bore down, we faced them with swords drawn and pikes hidden in the grass at our feet. 'Don't lift your pikes 'til I give the word,' I said."— Maeveen O'Donagh, *Memoirs of a Soldier*

Where it came from
Pikemen was released in 1997 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Fifth Edition core set. This iteration of the game served as a consolidation of the previous four core sets, aiming to standardize rules and card legality for the growing player base. The card itself represents the White color identity, which focuses on structured military order and defensive strength, reflecting the game's high-fantasy themes of organized warfare.
The artwork for this version of Pikemen was created by Christopher Rush, a foundational illustrator in the early history of the game. His style was instrumental in defining the visual language of early Magic sets, leaning into traditional fantasy aesthetics that emphasized clarity and character prominence. Upon release, the card was received as a standard common-rarity utility creature, valued primarily for its functional role in Limited play formats rather than its complexity or rarity.
