Provenance

Where it came from

Orochi Hatchery was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavily from Japanese folklore and mythology, introducing a distinct aesthetic that departed from the traditional Western fantasy tropes found in earlier sets. This card was designed to reflect the biological ingenuity of the snake-folk, or Orochi, providing a scalable mana sink that generates artifact creature tokens based on the amount of mana invested into its activation.

The artwork was commissioned from Alex Horley-Orlandelli, a prolific illustrator known for his dynamic and visceral style. Horley-Orlandelli leaned into the organic, somewhat unsettling nature of the hatchery, depicting a communal nest filled with budding Orochi. Upon release, the card was viewed as a niche utility piece for control decks, praised by players for its ability to dominate the late game if left unanswered on the battlefield.
