Lore

Why it matters

As an uncommon card from this set, Ossification functions as a piece of removal that shapes the board by exiling a creature or planeswalker. Its reliance on controlling a basic land creates an interesting tactical balance, requiring players to weigh their resource management against the need to neutralize a significant threat.

Provenance

Where it came from

Ossification was released in 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a white enchantment card that mechanically mirrors the classic 'O-Ring' effect, allowing players to exile a target creature or planeswalker. The card serves as a thematic piece within the set's narrative, representing the biomechanical transformation of the Multiverse under the influence of the Phyrexians.

The artwork for this particular iteration was illustrated by Campbell White. The visual direction focuses on the disturbing aesthetic of Phyrexian corruption, depicting a subject being overtaken by metallic, porcelain-like growths. This design choice was intended to evoke the body-horror elements inherent to the set's storyline, and it was generally well-received by the player community for its effectiveness in both limited and constructed formats.
