Where it came from
The Osteomancer Adept card was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set marked a significant departure for the game, featuring a plane inhabited entirely by anthropomorphic animals in a high-fantasy, storybook-inspired woodland setting. The character of the Osteomancer Adept was designed to embody the set's themes of resourcefulness and magical connection to the natural world, specifically through the lens of necromancy reimagined for small woodland creatures.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Livia Prima, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering visual aesthetic. Prima's design approach focused on blending the card's dark, skeletal magic with the whimsical, soft-focus art style that defines the Bloomburrow aesthetic. The card was well-received by players for its unique mechanical integration of graveyard manipulation and its distinctive visual narrative, which effectively captured the peculiar tension between the set's cute character designs and its more somber magical elements.
