Where it came from
Otharri, Suns' Glory was released in early 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One Commander set. This card was designed to serve as a primary commander for red-white decks focusing on the 'experience counter' mechanic, a returning feature from the Commander 2015 set. Its inclusion in the set reflects the narrative backdrop of the Phyrexian invasion, where Otharri is depicted as a shining, albeit corrupted, bastion of resistance against the encroaching mechanical perfection of New Phyrexia.
The card was illustrated by artist Livia Prima, who utilized a high-contrast aesthetic to emphasize the character's radiant, metallic wings and celestial theme. The design choice to grant experience counters upon attacking was intended to reward aggressive, proactive gameplay, aligning with the traditional color identity of Boros. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its ability to generate significant board presence independently, making it a popular choice for token-focused strategies in the Commander format.
