Where it came from
The Owlbear Cub card was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing directly from the lore of Dungeons & Dragons, the card depicts the endearing yet formidable creature that players can encounter within the Forgotten Realms setting. Its inclusion in this specific set was designed to bridge the gap between tabletop roleplaying mechanics and the fast-paced strategy of the trading card game, emphasizing the collaborative and creature-focused themes of the Commander format.
The artwork was created by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who aimed to capture both the monstrous heritage and the juvenile vulnerability of the creature. By focusing on the cub's expressive posture and the surrounding forest environment, the design emphasizes the creature's potential for growth rather than just its combat utility. Upon release, the card was well-received by fans of the franchise for its thematic flavor and its role in green-aligned creature decks, serving as a functional and narrative piece that honors the iconic status of the owlbear in D&D history.
