Where it came from
Owlbear Shepherd was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed specifically to integrate the lore and mechanics of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms campaign setting into the Commander multiplayer format, offering players a thematic bridge between tabletop roleplaying and card play.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized his characteristic painterly style to depict the titular creature amidst a forest landscape. The design focuses on the creature's role as a protector within the game's mechanics, intended to reward players for building decks centered around specific creature types. Upon release, it was received as a functional, flavor-rich inclusion for green-aligned decks that utilize the creature-heavy archetypes common in Dungeons & Dragons-themed sets.
