Pain Distributor

Pain Distributor was released in 2023 as part of the Commander set for the Magic: The Gathering expansion March of the Machine. This set was designed to reflect the multiversal scope of the Phyrexian invasion, with its Commander decks focusing on the various factions and allies resisting the assault. As a card tied to the Orzhov syndicate, it mechanicaly reinforces the white-black color identity’s penchant for taxing opponents and extracting value from shared misery.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, whose work is known for bringing a distinct, often dark aesthetic to the Magic: The Gathering card pool. In designing this piece, the intent was to capture the bureaucratic cruelty inherent to the Orzhov, depicted through the image of a figure distributing suffering as a form of currency or ledger entry. Upon release, it was well-received by the Commander community as a potent political tool for multiplayer games, effectively discouraging attacks by creating a direct cost for interacting with the board.
