What it does

Whenever an opponent is dealt 3 or more damage by a single source, that player discards a card.

The Rakdos make sure their victims remember their pain—or at least give up a little bit of their sanity in order to forget.

Provenance

Where it came from

Pain Magnification was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension expansion, the third and final set in the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to represent the sadistic nature of the Rakdos Cult, a chaotic and destructive guild within the game's urban setting. Mechanically, it reflects the Rakdos philosophy of converting suffering into power, punishing opponents for discarding cards or taking damage.

The artwork was illustrated by Dave Dorman, a prolific fantasy artist known for his cinematic and atmospheric style. Dorman utilized a high-contrast, visceral aesthetic to capture the dark essence of the Rakdos guild. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a niche tool for specialized graveyard-focused or aggressive black-red decks, remaining a flavor-heavy staple for players interested in the unique mechanical identity of the Ravnica plane.
