Painful Memories

Painful Memories was originally introduced in the Portal Second Age set in 1998, designed as part of a beginner-friendly product line intended to simplify Magic: The Gathering gameplay. The card was subsequently reprinted in the Classic Sixth Edition core set in 1999, which marked a significant turning point in the game's history as it introduced the updated 'Sixth Edition rules' that modernized timing, combat, and stack mechanics to create a more consistent competitive experience.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Brian Snoddy, whose work is characterized by a distinct, gritty aesthetic prevalent in late 1990s fantasy art. The design of the card serves as a targeted disruptive effect, forcing an opponent to discard specific cards, which reflects the recurring theme of psychological attrition found in Black-aligned cards during that era of the game.
