Provenance

Where it came from

Palace Sentinels was released in 2020 as part of the Commander Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Originally debuting in the 2016 Conspiracy: Take the Crown set, the card was reprinted here to introduce the Monarch mechanic to the Commander format. This mechanic encourages aggressive play by rewarding players for controlling a specific game state, reflecting the political and throne-seeking themes central to both the Conspiracy and Commander Legends sets.

The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, whose contributions to the game often lean into atmospheric and high-fantasy aesthetics. In this illustration, Voss captures the disciplined posture of the sentinels, emphasizing their role as stoic guardians of royal authority. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its utility in multiplayer games, serving as a staple for white-aligned decks looking to generate card advantage while maintaining board presence.
