Where it came from
The Paradox Engine was released in 2017 as part of the Kaladesh Inventions series, a set of premium, foil-etched masterwork cards included as rare inserts within the Kaladesh and Aether Revolt expansions. The design draws from the aesthetic of Kaladesh, a plane inspired by art-deco sensibilities and high-fantasy steampunk technology, characterized by intricate metallic filigree and glowing conduits. Mechanically, the card was designed to reward players for casting multiple spells, functioning as a high-powered artifact that untaps all non-land permanents upon casting a spell.
The illustration for this iteration was created to emphasize the grand, gear-driven ingenuity of the plane, utilizing the distinct frame design exclusive to the Masterpiece series. Upon its debut, the card was recognized for its significant impact on various competitive formats, particularly Commander, where its ability to generate infinite mana and trigger loops made it a centerpiece for combo-oriented deck builders. Its reception by players was marked by a blend of technical appreciation for its mechanics and high demand among collectors for its specialized aesthetic.
