Provenance

Where it came from

Paranoid Delusions was released in 2013 as part of the Gatecrash expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It features the Dimir guild, a shadowy cabal of information brokers and assassins operating within the cityscape of Ravnica. The card was designed to represent the psychological warfare and surveillance tactics associated with this faction, mechanics that encourage the mill strategy of depleting an opponent's library.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Clint Cearley. He aimed to visualize the paranoia inherent to the Dimir, depicting a figure caught in a web of shifting shadows and intrusive, whispers-turned-physical manifestations. The illustration received positive feedback for effectively translating the abstract concept of mental instability into the established, gothic-industrial aesthetic of the Ravnica plane.
