Where it came from
Path of Ancestry was first introduced in the 2017 Commander anthology as a utility land designed to support tribal-themed decks. Its mechanical intent is to reward players for building decks around a shared creature type by offering both color fixing and a scry trigger, facilitating smoother gameplay for complex, synergetic strategies.
The card features artwork by Titus Lunter, who utilized a sweeping, ethereal aesthetic to capture the concept of an ancestral plane. The design was received well by the Magic: The Gathering community, becoming a staple in Commander formats for its versatility and its ability to provide consistent card selection in decks reliant on specific creature lineages.
