What it does

Each player mills two cards. Then you put a creature card from a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. It's an artifact in addition to its other types.

Will of the Planeswalkers — Starting with you, each player votes for planeswalk or chaos. If planeswalk gets more votes, planeswalk. If chaos gets more votes or the vote is tied, chaos ensues.

Provenance

Where it came from

Path of the Schemer was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine Commander set, a collection of supplemental cards designed for the multiplayer Commander format. This card features the 'Planechase' mechanic, a game variant where players travel between different locations from across the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, each providing unique global effects. It was created to provide utility for players navigating these shifting planar environments, specifically rewarding those who can manipulate the planar die to their advantage.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Livia Prima, who aimed to capture the essence of a calculated, shifting strategy. The design centers on a figure embodying the tactical, foresight-heavy nature of blue-aligned magic. Within the player base, the card was received as a niche but effective tool for Commander decks that focus on Planechase, valued for its ability to smooth out the inherent randomness of the planar deck rather than relying solely on luck.
