Patient Turtle

Patient Turtle was released as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards collection in 2019. This set was unique within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, consisting of cards printed specifically for the convention-exclusive Mystery Booster draft experience. These cards were designed to explore unconventional mechanics and design spaces that would not typically appear in standard, tournament-legal sets, often featuring a distinct, utilitarian aesthetic that mimicked the look of internal Wizards of the Coast design documents.

The card features a design centered on the game's mechanics of delay and defensive play, consistent with the turtle creature type's identity in the game. It was illustrated by the internal design team, following the minimalist, template-focused aesthetic used across the entire Playtest Cards run. Because these cards were intended primarily as a draft experience for event attendees, they were received by the community as a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the creative process, often sought after by collectors for their rarity and experimental nature.
