Where it came from
The Pearled Unicorn was originally released in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Fifth Edition base set in 1997. As one of the earliest cards in the game, it was designed during a period when the aesthetic and mechanics of the trading card game were still being defined by Richard Garfield and a small team of artists. It served as a functional white creature, common in availability, intended to populate the early game with low-cost units.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was one of the core group of artists responsible for the game's initial visual identity. Maddocks utilized a distinct, dark, and often surreal illustrative style that became iconic for the game's first few years. The depiction of the unicorn was meant to evoke the mythological origins of the creature while fitting within the gritty, high-fantasy tone established for early Magic card art, and it was received by players as a straightforward, recognizable staple of white-aligned decks.
