Where it came from
Perilous Research was originally released in the 2005 Saviors of Kamigawa set, designed to embody the thematic focus on hand size and resource management prevalent in the Kamigawa block. As a blue instant that allows a player to draw two cards at the cost of sacrificing a permanent, it was created as a high-risk, high-reward utility card.
