Where it came from
Perpetual Timepiece was originally released in the 2016 Kaladesh set, reflecting the set’s central themes of invention, artifact craftsmanship, and aether-fueled technology. It was later reprinted as part of the 2021 Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander product, appearing as card number 354 within the specific Secrets of Strixhaven Commander series. This card features mechanics that allow players to mill their own library and recover cards from the graveyard, effectively utilizing the passage of time as a resource for tactical recursion.
The art, illustrated by James Ryman, showcases the elaborate, clockwork aesthetic characteristic of the Kaladesh plane. The design leans into the high-fantasy industrial motif, emphasizing intricate filigree and mechanical complexity meant to evoke the feeling of an ancient, mystical engine. Upon its release, it was recognized by the Magic: The Gathering community as a versatile utility artifact, particularly valued in graveyard-focused decks for its unique blend of library manipulation and resource management.
