Where it came from
Perplexing Chimera was originally introduced in the 2013 Magic: The Gathering set Born of the Gods. The creature was designed as a rare blue enchantment creature that forces a complex psychological game by allowing opponents to swap control of spells, effectively turning the game into a chaotic negotiation. The design reflects the themes of the Theros block, which drew heavily from Greek mythology, with the Chimera serving as a manifestation of unpredictable, shifting threats.
This specific iteration from the Secret Lair Drop series, numbered 7039, features a distinct stylistic update consistent with the collector-focused releases Wizards of the Coast launched in late 2019. These drops are curated to showcase experimental, guest, or specialized artistic themes that diverge from the standard aesthetic of main-line sets. By isolating specific cards for limited-window availability, the series caters to players and collectors who prioritize unique card aesthetics and thematic curation over traditional set progression.
