Persecute

Persecute was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed as a powerful black sorcery meant to force opponents to discard cards based on a chosen color. The card reflects the high-variance, disruptive design philosophy of the era, which often emphasized game-altering effects that could dismantle an opponent's hand in a single play. By the time it was reprinted in the Eighth Edition core set in 2003, it had solidified its reputation as a staple of black-aligned control decks.

The Eighth Edition printing featured new, updated art by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more grotesque or overtly dark visuals common in early Magic: The Gathering sets. Staples focused on a more cinematic, grim aesthetic that highlighted the psychological weight of the spell. The reprint was significant because it marked the transition to the 'Modern' card frame, providing the classic illustration with a clean, contemporary look that aimed to unify the game's visual identity across different eras of play.
